Classical Music In Hindi Movies
What you are describing could be called good music, rich music, emotional music or deep music, but I would hardly call such a description as “intelligent” music. Of course, one’s answer depends on how s/he interprets the word “intelligence” in this context; I am interpreting it as being “clever”. Let me give an example from film music. Take, for example, Naushad, or S D Burman. Their tunes are great, but generally it is straight-forward to sing their songs. On the other hand, try singing/playing some of the songs composed by Salil Chaudhury, you should see the difference (Md. Rafi is known to have made comments on the difficulty of singing Salil Chaudhury’s compositions). The “difficulty” in Salil Chaudhury’s music arises mainly from the fact that he uses patterns that are unusual in Indian music, yet his compositions always sound “indian”.
Similarly, in the classical domain, I would interpret cleverness as composing unusual patterns while staying inside the raag. For this, the composer/singer must know what “defines” a raag very well. Thus Pt. Ravi Shankar’s music truly classifies as “intelligen
